University of Music and Performing Arts Munich
The University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (Hochschule für Musik und Theater München) is one of the oldest and longest-established conservatoires for the music and theatre professions in Germany. As well as training in performing and teaching in all music subjects and Ballet, the University also offers joint study programmes with the Theaterakademie August Everding covering Operatic Performance, Acting, Directing, Musicals and Make-up for the Theatre.
At the University, 1,300 students study around 100 different Study Programmes offered by 560 professors and teachers, ranging from Study Programmes for particularly gifted young musicians to the highest level of professional music education.
The University of Music and Performing Arts Munich makes a major contribution to the city’s musical and theatrical life with about 750 concerts and other events each year. These take place in the buildings at Arcisstraße 12, Luisenstraße 37a, Gasteig, Prinzregententheater and at other performing venues in Munich.
The University maintains a high reputation for research through publications, symposia and other events organised by the Musicology Department, the Music Pedagogy Department, the Musikpädagogisches Institut für Lehrerfortbildung und Unterrichtsforschung (Music Education Institute for Teacher Training and Educational Research) (MILU) and the Musiklabor München – a project of the Echtzeithalle e.V. in cooperation with the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. The proportion of foreign students is around 35 %.

Students must pass an audition (artistic proficiency test) to be offered a place on a study programme. Candidates from non-German-speaking countries entering bachelor's study programmes in addition to the artistic proficiency test need to provide information on sufficient knowledge of German to follow the requested study programme. A few postgraduate programmes ask for knowledge of German as well.
