Weather and Climate

Bavaria is beautiful all year round. Our region lies in the continental climate zone with distinct seasons that offer everything from summer sun and heat to winter cold and snow.

For a big part of the year – between May and September – skies are mostly sunny and temperatures are pleasantly warm. This is the best time for outdoor activities such as hiking, water sports or cycling, for visiting outdoor festivals or meeting friends in a park or beer garden. Expect average daytime temperatures around 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (68 – 86° F) during this period, sometimes cooling down to around 8 degrees (46° F) at night time.

Between November and February, it can get quite chilly and skies are often overcast, making it the perfect time to explore culture and city life. Average daytime temperatures then range from around three to minus one degrees Celsius (37.4 – 30.2° F) – so make sure you pack a warm jacket! Of course, this is also the perfect time of year for skiing. You can start hitting the slopes from early to mid-December, while the ski season slowly winds down some time in March. You can still ski the glaciers in summer, though, wearing a t-shirt instead of heavy winter jackets.

Spring and autumn in Bavaria also have their distinct charms, covering meadows in beautiful wildflowers or golden foliage. During these months, it is particularly useful to have an umbrella handy, as showers are frequent. In cities, you can expect daytime temperatures of around five to 20 degrees Celsius (41 – 68° F). At night, temperatures can sometimes drop to freezing point in autumn. You should also be careful if you go walking in the mountains during these seasons, as higher regions may be covered in snow and ice. Always check the weather conditions before you go on a hike!
