University of Regensburg

The University of Regensburg (UR), founded in 1962, is a modern campus university located at the southern edge of a historic city dating back to the Middle Ages. UR offers an outstanding atmosphere for academic achievement with excellent supervision and services, especially for international students. As a research university, UR not only offers bachelor programs but also a wide spectrum of master and doctoral degrees. The university’s current student population is around 21,000 with more than 1,600 international students.

The UR is an internationally oriented university that has established agreements with ca. 360 universities from other countries. During a normal year, UR welcomes around 300 visiting scholars and 570 exchange students from all over the world. Due to its geographic location, the university has always considered itself a bridge between East and West, and has therefore concluded several cooperation agreements aiming at a broad research and teaching exchange. Due to the fact that UR is a campus university, students have short walks between the different buildings and facilities of the university. Excellent bus connections to the university and within the city limits make life in Regensburg very comfortable. Students find on campus a vibrant cultural life with more than 20 theater groups and various choirs and orchestras. In terms of activities, it is also worth mentioning the university’s own sports center. Each semester there is a broad variety of courses on offer, ranging from A as in aerobics all the way to Y as in yoga.

The attractiveness of the University of Regensburg is enhanced by the appeal of its location – in a city with ever-present traces of more than 2,000 years of history. Since July 2006, Regensburg carries the UNESCO distinction “World Heritage“, which recognizes the unique character of the medieval city center and its magnificent architecture—above all the Old Stone Bridge over the Danube and St. Peter‘s Cathedral. Regensburg‘s cityscape still testifies to the economic and cultural vitality and the political eminence of the city during the Middle Ages. Today, numerous international enterprises are based in Regensburg, and the city has one of the strongest economies in Germany, resulting in many attractive job opportunities.

30,000 students are enrolled at Regensburg’s universities, forming an important part of the city’s community and urban life. Numerous student pubs, cafés, and beer gardens, as well as many city festivities, such as the annual Jazz Weekend, make Regensburg a popular student city.

The city of Regensburg is characterized by a relaxed atmosphere, in which international students receive a warm welcome and where they can feel comfortable and safe.
