Würzburg University of Music

The Würzburg University of Music is one of Germany’s most traditional educational institutions – its beginnings date back to 1804. As a modern musical institute, the university nowadays effectively combines traditional and innovative elements.

The currently 620 students are taught by around 260 tutors from around the world, among them numerous internationally well-known artists. The university offers excellent musical instruction ranging from pre-college to masters and master class programmes with over 50 courses of study available. A personal and familiar learning atmosphere, as well as close contact with the teachers, are the results of the relatively small size of the university. This makes the university extremely attractive for students.

Three modern buildings dedicated to teaching, research and musical training are located around the Würzburg Residenz. The students have access to well-equipped practice rooms, to recording studios with up-to-date technique, an extensive library as well as many computers. The university possesses its own opera stage, a large concert hall and further representative concert halls and conference rooms: the best conditions are provided for the university’s numerous performances and events which enrich the city’s cultural scene.

A quarter of the students come from abroad. International students may approach the university’s international office for support. Various support programmes are available to help them settle in and to assist them during their studies. Würzburg University of Music offers free German Courses. Students can also attend language courses at the University of Würzburg’s language center on favourable terms.

Würzburg

Würzburg is an attractive city right in the heart of Germany. Around 34.000 students are enrolled at the three universities. The high percentage of students in the city leads to an interesting and lively cultural scene. One of Würzburg’s assets is its comparably small size: getting from A to B is extremely quick and easy.

The city is charmingly situated on the river Main and surrounded by vineyards. The mid-range mountains Spessart, Steigerwald and Rhön aren’t far away and are very popular destinations for outings. Würzburg is located in the well-known wine region Franconia, where many cheerful wine festivals take place.

Due to its central location and its good connection to the transport network, Würzburg is ideally situated for exploring the whole country. The metropolises Berlin, Hamburg or Munich are only a couple of hours away, while it takes 1½ hours to reach the airport in Frankfurt.

Culture, sport or a colourful array of bars and pubs – the offer is huge. Numerous festivals such as the Mozart Festival, the Umsonst & Draußen or the Würzburger Hafensommer provide for cultural and musical diversion. The Africa Festival and the Street Music Festival are the largest of their kind in Europe.

Würzburg enables a high living standard with relatively low living expenses. There are many halls of residence which offer inexpensive accommodation. The whole city is characterized by an easygoing and relaxed atmosphere – it’s a great place to live and study!
