How to make new friends

You have just arrived in Bavaria and you are still feeling a bit lonely? That is perfectly normal! Most other students who have just moved to their university towns will experience exactly the same. The good news is: You are all in this together, and there are plenty of opportunities to make new friends!

Orientation Weeks

Many universities offer orientation weeks with special programmes for international students. These often include organised activities such as sightseeing tours, daytrips and parties. Sometimes you can even sign up for free language classes. It is a perfect opportunity to get to know your new surroundings and meet lots of other students from around the world. Check your university website or contact the university’s international office for more information.

Sports

Basketball, Zumba or football – you definitely do not have to give up your fitness regime when you start university in Bavaria. And joining a sports team can be a great way to meet new people as well! Most universities have sports facilities and run fitness programmes on campus. Joining fees for gyms or exercise classes are usually very reasonable. However, places and memberships can sometimes be limited. It is best to read up on sports facilities at your university before you arrive and sign up as soon as you can.

Join a Club or Society

Do you have a penchant for acting, singing in a choir, or organising student events? There are plenty of university clubs and societies that cater to all interests. These clubs are usually run by individual students or student groups rather than the universities themselves. Information on clubs and societies can normally be found on the universities’ webpages.

Find a Tandem Partner

If you would like to improve your German or another language, why not team up with a tandem partner? Tandem partners usually meet up in an informal location like a café or restaurant once or twice a week simply to chat in their respective mother tongues. It goes without saying that apart from improving your conversation skills in a foreign language, it is a fantastic way to make new friends!
