Kempten University of Applied Sciences

Kempten University of Applied Sciences is located in the southwest of Bavaria in the heart of the Allgäu region. It was founded as a state-owned university of applied sciences in 1977. More than 6.000 young women and men study here with a good view of the Alps. Varied degree courses are offered, covering Business & Tourism Management, Social & Health Sciences, Engineering Sciences and Computer Science & Multimedia.

Some 140 full-time professors, 250 associate professors from the industry and 200 scientific and non-academic staff manage the study programme and assist with student life.

A practical approach to teaching and learning, an international outlook as well as up-to-date building and technology standards ensure excellent study conditions and academic training on an excellent level. All buildings are situated on our city campus and the University’s moderate size creates a very personal atmosphere.

The University offers dual study courses in co-operation with the Bavarian Industry Association as part of the  ‘hochschule-dual’-scheme. These courses enable students to increase the practical part of their studies, or to combine academic studies with a vocational degree.

International students are well looked after in Kempten. At the start of each semester the International Office organises orientation weeks. These include intensive German language courses and various trips to the surrounding areas to help students settle in. The University management as well as the Mayor of Kempten personally welcome all international students each year.

Students also have the possibility to take part in tandem programmes, allowing two students of different cultural backgrounds to exchange their language skills, while local tandem partners provide useful tips for student life. All team members of the International Office will support and assist all international students throughout their time at Kempten University.

With more than 2,000 years of history Kempten is one of the oldest towns in Germany. It has 70,000 inhabitants and is located in the centre of the holiday region Allgäu in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. Munich, the state capital, as well as the neighbouring countries of Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are only an hour’s drive away.

Kempten offers many different opportunities to enjoy culture, shopping and life. If you like sports, you will enjoy the Cambomare leisure pool, the ice stadium, the golf course or the artificial climbing wall. The best places to relax are in the “Hofgarten” court garden, on the “Burghalde”, a former medieval fortress, or in the “Engelhalde” Park.

Student housing in and around Kempten is comparatively inexpensive and part-time jobs are easy to find.

Not only is the Allgäu one of the safest regions in Germany but also one of the most popular holiday regions. The alpine mountains, green meadows and lakes offer an unforgettable year-round leisure and sports experience. Skiing in winter, hiking and mountain biking in summer, swimming in the lakes – the region offers innumerable opportunities to spend your leisure time. And its beautiful landscape is literally crowned with the spectacular fairy tale castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria.

There are also culinary delights: the Allgäu is well-known for its dairy products and excellent cheese, and its national dish the “Allgäuer Kässpatzen”, homemade pasta with cheese.
