Do I need German language skills to study at a Bavarian university?
You need to have a good command of German to enrol in most full-time degrees at Bavarian universities. There are a number of certificates such as the DSH or TestDaF that are accepted as proof of language proficiency. You should contact the International Office of your chosen university to find out the exact language requirements for your chosen degree course.

Why should I learn German?
Learning a new language takes time and patience – but it is well worth the effort! Once you have mastered German, you will find it much easier to follow lectures or participate in seminars. You will also significantly improve your career prospects if you speak a second language fluently. A good grasp of German is especially useful in business, as many international companies and institutions are based in Germany. And last but not least, if you speak the local language, it is also much easier to meet people and make new friends.
Where can I learn German?
If you are planning to study at a German university, you should start learning German as soon as possible, preferably while you are still in your home country. There are many Goethe Institutes or other language schools that offer German courses both in Germany and abroad. If you have some time during your holidays, you could also take part in an intensive German summer course at a Bavarian university.

Will my foreign degree or school leaving certificate be recognised in Bavaria?
If you do not have a German university entrance qualification, foreign school leaving or degree certificates have to be approved by your chosen university in Bavaria. Do I need health insurance?
Students at German universities need to be registered with a health insurance company. EU nationals and citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland can register for the free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which entitles you to statutory health care during your stay in Germany. Students from other countries have to register with a German insurance company.
